Welcome to Integrated English! This class focuses on enhancing the four basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The basis of our class will be a series of mysteries, some literary and one we will solve in class. In addition, students will make at least one map using Google Maps.

Sherlock Holmes stories | The Hound of the Baskervilles (shorter version)
Some interesting conclusions by Brad Keefauver about Watson's wives
Who was the kind, patient lady that took care of Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson? Of course, that was Mrs. Hudson, about whom Catherine Cooke explains.
Often the Sherlock Holmes stories had our two heroes out and about in London, which at that time had gas streetlights. Gerald Boerner offers an interesting history of gas street lighting.
Agatha Christie
The Mysterious Affair at Styles | The Secret Adversary
G. K. Chesterton
The Innocence of Father Brown | The Wisdom of Father Brown
the Map Project
As you know from our class discussion, your group will make a map with at least 10 locations based on a mystery theme.
To help you get started, here are some ideas.
Holmes Reports
As you know from class, you are required to write two reports based on the Sherlock Holmes canon. The first report is due by Christmas (December 25) and is a report on one of the Holmes stories (your choice).
The second report is due by the end of February and the topic is any interesting point (place, thing, person, etc.) from the Holmes canon. As you'll remember, we looked over a list of possible ideas in class, but there are many more possibilities.
Riddles, Mysteries, and More
Treverton (2007) Risks and riddles
As you'll know from our class discussion, riddles at times give rise to conspiracy theories, some of which have remarkable longevity. Click here for quite a list of conspiracies (with photos), courtesy of the good people at The Telegraph.
Immediately below is a video clip of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (with his dog, Paddy) speaking about both Sherlock Holmes and his belief in spiritualism.
Writing
As you know from class, I require polite email. Recall, too, that if you send me a file, the filename has a certain form.
Here's an example of the report style that you should use.
